About Us

My name is Kay Augustus and I am the proprietor of Augustus Gloop Cakes.

With the surname Augustus I was destined to do something sweet, and I have a genuine passion for anything Cake and Sugar craft!

I am a married mother of two children and my cakey creativity began when I started making my children's birthday cakes, over the years their requests are getting more adventurous so I decided to enrol in a Sugar craft Course at my local College which taught me a few techniques and built my confidence.

I then decided that I would start selling to the public, so I contacted my Local Environmental Health Office who arranged a visit to come and inspect my cooking and preparation area...It was nerve racking but we achieved a 5 and have retained it all this time! I also decided to join The British Sugar craft Guild who provide me with my Public Liability insurance. We meet up Monthly and talk cake and have sugar craft demonstrators.

Over the years I have made hundreds of Birthday and Wedding cakes, I would drive my husband wild with all the mess in the kitchen and sugar craft tools strewn around the place, he got so sick of it that he decided to make me my own space...a cake cave!!

My cake cave has been approved by Environmental Health and has also been featured in Cake Masters Magazine!

 

In the new Augustus Gloop HQ I had more room to design larger and more extravagant cakes, with this my confidence grew and in 2017 I decided to enter a competition called Cake International which in the 'Sugar craft world' is a really big thing!! I entered the Wedding Cake category with a Disney UP Theme Wedding Cake and was blown away when I received a Silver for all my hard work! I appeared in the local Guardian newspaper alongside my daughter who also entered and received a Silver. My sweet journey continued to get better this year when I was asked to be Secretary of the Swansea Branch of the Sugar craft guild.

At the beginning of 2018 I was approach by a member of staff from the BBC, they were filming in Swansea for an episode of CBBC's Marrying Mum & Dad where children are responsible for planning their parents big day using a theme of their choice. Being a part of a local Circus group the children decided to stick with a theme they know best, The Circus! The children briefed me saying that they would like a cake that could be Juggled by one of their acts...now, I'm not in the business of throwing food so this was a bit of an ask! Hygiene was at the forefront of my mind, and I decided to make cake balls which were coated in a coloured candy coating. I placed these inside round plastic balls to ensure they would remain food safe! I attended the wedding and they even said that my 2 children could come and meet the hosts, we got to watch all the filming and the Juggler throwing the cake so that all the guests could catch it. 

Later in the year and lots of cakes later I decided to enter Cake International again. This time I decided to make a wedding cake inspired by my favourite Disney film ever - The Little Mermaid. I spent 3 weeks making the cake, every day learning a new technique to be able to add as much to the cake as possible. Cake International has become the worlds largest cake competition and in this particular year there were 1800 entries into the show with nearly 300 in the Wedding Cakes Category. The Judges said that it was the hardest Judging year and out of the 300 in my category only 15 achieved gold...and I was one of them!!  I was blown away! To add to this I got critiqued by the star of Channel 4's Extreme Cake Makers:

'Your work is clean, beautifully detailed and Imaginative'  - Suzanne Thorpe of The Frostery. 

I am so very proud of this achievement and feel that it has been the highlight in my career so far. It once again got me in the Guardian newspaper.

I pride myself in making Wedding cakes which are sometimes pretty and other times pretty crazy, I have never made the same cake twice and truly believe that your wedding or celebration cake should represent your personality and should be something your guests talk about for years to come!
